Cinereach is a non-profit based in NYC dedicated to promoting socially conscious filmmaking. To that end, they have a grant program and a small fellowship program, The Reach Film Fellowship. Four young filmmakers received $5,000 and mentoring from top documentarians Albert Maysles (Salesman), Sandi Dubowski (Trembling Before G-d), Rachel Grady (Jesus Camp) and Afia Nathaniel, an acclaimed independent filmmaker from Pakistan. The shorts will premiere at a reception on March 19 in New York, and it looks like they will also be available to watch online.
From the press release, “The Fellowship recipients were selected by a judging panel that included Jeffrey Abramson, vice president of the film division of Gen Art; Caroline Baron, producer (Monsoon Wedding, Capote) and founder of FilmAid International; Benjamin Goldhirsh, founder and CEO of GOOD; and Kent Jones, associate directorof programming for the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
The Reach Film Fellowship is the centerpiece of the nascent Cinereach, whose activities also include grant-making and in-house productions. The grantdivision has distributed over $1 million to date, and last summer saw thecommencement of Cinereach’s first in-house feature, a documentary about the Green Long March in China that is currently in post-production.”
