I couldn't agree with you more and, believe me, you're not alone in your focus on the issues. The thing that's working in the favor of independent voices is that the internet can't be co-opted by corporations. They've been trying and failing since way back when Mosaic was the only web browser and the only way online was dial-up. The web will always be a tool of the people and, like water continually finds it's level, people will find information.
Distributors, studios, and theaters scoff at online distribution, but they're missing the writing on the wall. We're in the middle of a perfect storm of need and opportunity:
- Indie filmmakers are facing an increasingly competitive, difficult production and distribution environment
- Ever increasing bandwidth and download speeds make pulling entertainment onto your playback device (whatever it may be) simple and fast.
- As more and more media is made available on-demand, the more viewers expect to see everything on demand. Indeed, an entire generation is growing up in an environment of information/entertainment ubiquity. They don't want to be told when and where. Just tell them where to find it online.
Corporations with a vested interest in dated technologies and outmoded processes are always going to be dick-swinging and stomping around, trying to stop change. But they can't. And if the big machers in the film industry don't believe us, they can ask their buddies over in the music business how their Luddite stance has been working out for them.
